MUNICIPALITY OF CHANIΑ The Nomos or Prefecture of Chania occupies the westernmost part of Crete and is ringed on three sides by the sea. The long coastline and the towering mass of the White Mountains have for millennia determined the fate of the land. It is a unique place to live with a diverse landscape changing from majestic mountains to a calm or stormy sea, from wild gorges to green plains with olive trees and orange groves and from hillsides abundant with rare scented herbs to shady forests of chestnut Cyprus and cedar. The Cretan like his ancient forefather is proud but peaceful and hospitable. He works in the mountains, the fields and the sea and has a love of beauty and gallantry although quickly stirred to fierce anger by anyone who meddles with the two things he most cherishes -peace and freedom. From these people sprang the greatest politician of modern Greece - Eleftherios Venizelos who watches over the city, land and sea that he loved from his tomb at Akrotiri. Chania is a beautiful town with 60,000 inhabitants. Built on the edge of the Cretan Sea, it consists of the old part within the Venetian walls, the modern town and the historical quarter of Halepa. Worth visiting are the Archaelogical Museum, the Museum of Historical Archives, the old quarter and the harbour. Chania offers every kind of recreation, services and shops selling fine merchandise and souvenirs.
